today we watched another episode of the twilight zone the name of the episode was "I sing the body electric" which was about a family that has three kids that need a babysitter and they have had problems with all of the human sitters, so they resort to having a robot sitter created and to of the tree kids want to make the sitter look like their dead mother and in the end the robot looks exactly like their dead mother. and as the children grow up the robot they refer to as grandma teaches them about the world and essentialy fills the shoes of their dead mother until all the kids leave for college then "grandma" returns to the factory she was built in. I think that having robots or A.I.s teach our kids is a possibility in the near future because they have no bias and they can have access to an unlimited amount of information. on the other side of the table there is the argument that if you do not interact and or learn from a human you do not gain social skills.
today we watched a TED talk about super conductors which when a super conductor is put together with a magnetic strip it causes the super conductor to start "levitating". I think this is intresting because this technology could be use for so many things like for example you could have cars that do not need wheels because they don't touch the ground. there is a downside to the superconductors levitating effect which is that it appears that the superconductor needs to constantly be cold because in the demonstration boaz almog (the demonstrator) had to put the superconductor in a cup of liquid nitrogen after a few seconds of letting the superconductor levitate. all in all i think the technology is cool and will be applyed to everyday tasks in the future. Today we watched another episode of The Twilight Zone this one was called its a good life and it was about a monster that took the form of a child that had the ability wish whatever he wanted or disliked into existance. the town the child lived in was isolated from the rest of the world and anything the child did not like he destroyed some of the things he wished away and or destroyed were people and animals he did not like also he disabled all automobiles and any means of electricity. the people living in the town with the child were forced to think only good thoughts about the child and everything he did of face the risk of being wished away. what in learned from this episode was that monsters and or aliens do not always look like little green men or big hairy beasts with big teeth, they can also look and act like humans. the episode also had the three plus one elements of science fiction which are fantastic assumption which is that a monster exist's in this world, the intelluctual excitment is that some where there could be a person and or monster we are unaware of that has unuiqe abilities to wish things away or into existansce, the ambigious ending happens when the child has wished away the only man that was opposed to what the child was doing and the child has complete control of what the towns people do and think. Today we watched a ted talk about suspended animation which is the process of de-animating and looking dead and then wake up unharmed. Some plants and animals use suspended animation to stay alive in cold weather some examples are plants and sea monkeys. I think the idea of putting humans in suspended animation is cool because the ability to save lives by essentialy freezing someone so they have a chance to get the medical care they need to continue living. The other cool aspect of putting someone into suspended animation is that when the person is reanimated there is no side affect done to harm them.
this relates to science fiction because in sci fi movies and video games characters are often put in cyrostasis capsules that today we watched a episode of the twilight zone called to serve man it was about aliens that came to earth to help man and in the end it turned out that the aliens wanted so serve humans like to serve humans for a meal.some of the elements of sci fi were evident when the aliens came to earth which was an example of a fantastic assumption . another example of the elements of sci fi was when the humans were interrogating the aliens with a lie detector (high adventure). the last example of an element of science fiction was the ambiguous ending which was when it was revealed that the humans were not going the the alien planet to vacation they were going their so the aliens could eat them.
Today we watched a ted talk about the next species of human, it was about a guy that talked about the economy and national debt then he talked about robots and making skin cells. In the end he connected it all together by saying that we could change ourselves as a species via using technology and science.
the part that stuck out most to me was that if someone was born with missing limb or defective organ modern medicine could grow one which I think is pretty cool. Today we watched an episode of the twilight zone called the invaders it was about this woman who had a alien land in her house and it chased her around her house. in the end the woman destroyed the alien ship and killed the aliens. the science fiction aspect of the episode is that these aliens exist. the episode also had all the elements of science fiction because there was high adventure which was the fighting scenes and there was a fantastic assumption and inteluctuel excitement when it is evident there are aliens in the universe. also the aliens sending the last transmition to their people is a sign of an ambigous ending
