for our group work today we watched a episode of the twilight zone titled the lonely, it was about a man who was convicted of a murder and his punishment was to live out his scentence of 25 years on an uninhabited asteroide. every three months he gets a shipment of supplies and occasionaly a book or a deck of cards, one day his supplies come in and he gets a android woman to keep him company but after three months the man is convinced that she is a human and when his supplies come in the crew of the ship tells him that his case has been reviseted and his is free to go back to earth but the only problem is that the ship does not have enough room for him and his android but the man wont leave her so to prove his point the captain of the ship shoots the android to show the man she is a robot. the intellectual excitment and the fantastic assumption is that in the future we could resort to sending our prisoners off planet to be imprisoned, the high adventure occurs when the woman is shot reveling that she is a robot. the ambigious ending is that we do not know what happens to the prisoner when he gets back to earth.
today we read another short story this one was titled but who can replace man? the story followed a robot that's main purpose was to plow fields and every day he gets orders from humans on what to plant and where to plow, one day the robot does not recive any orders on what to do and after talking to other robots who did not recive orders he finds out that all the humans are dead and the robots are free to rule themselves and the robot dicides to embark on a mission with other robots to got to the city and become the leaders of all the robots and on the way there they run into a group humans and the story ends with the humans asking the robots to feed them and they all answer with yes master. I thought that the story is interesting because in the start the robots were all about not serving the humans and governing themselves but when they met one of the last humans they imediatly switched mind sets and obeyed the human. the intellectual excitment and fantastic assumption go hand in hand together because that what would happen if something wiped out all the humans and all of our machines and robots were left without any instructions? the high adventure is when the robots meet the human and instead of destroying him they obey his commands. the ambigious ending is what happens to humanity do we make a great comeback or do we all die off?
today we read a short story called I have no mouth but I must scream and it was about a group of humans trapped in a artificial world created by a artificial inteligdnce named A.M.. the humans are constantly tourtured by A.M. forced to starve and every time they are on the brink of death they ar ebtought back to life to continue being tortured by A.M., in the end the humans get the chance to kill each other without the risk of being brought back to life by A.M. and one human kills the other four but A.M. prevents the last human from taking his own life. what I learned from the story was that sometimes death is not a negative thing and I also learned that sometimes giving a robot a concious or emotions does not always result in a happy ending(I have no mouth but I must scream)
today we watched another episode of the twilight zone the episode we watched was called uncle simion and the story was about a woman why served her old uncle as a maid cleaning his house and feeding him while he worked on his experiments in the basement, the uncle was very crule and rude to his neice and one day she got tired of it and pushed him down some stairs and killed him. when the uncle died all his assets and property went to his neice but under one condition that she maintain her residence in the house and that she does not remove or destroy any of his stuff. later she finds out that her uncle built a robot that was built to continue his work after death. the robot its self makes up for the intelluctual excitment and the high adventure because one day we could upload copys of people into robots to continue living after death also the robot was the high adventure because everyone was suprised when we found out it was a copy of the uncle.
today our group watched an episode of the twilight zone called the lonely which was about a convict who was scentenced to fifty years in solitary confinment on an astroide and every three months a ship brings him supplies and occasionaly some gifts such as books and card games on one of the suppy runs the crew brings him a woman to keep him company. after a while the convict falls in love with the woman and in the end the supply ship comes to tell him his scentance was pardoned and that he a can come back to earth but the problem is the convict wants to bring the woman back with him but there is no room for the woman on the ship, then the captin of the ship tells him that the woman was really a robot disigned to keep him from going insane and to prove his point the captain shoots the woman revealing wires and metal parts beneath her flesh. what I learned from the episode was that high adventure does not always have to involve a fight scene or a chase scene but it can be a mental adventure or emotional adventure like when the convict finds out the woman is a robot.
This week our group watched an episode of the TV show the outer limits, the episode we watched was O.B.I.T and it was about a machine and an alien. the machine was created by the alien and the machine's purpose was to once tuned to a person's brain frequency the user of the machine (which is called O.B.I.T)could watch their targets every move on a display. the episode starts with the murder of a scientist who was using the machine, because of the murder the government launches a investigation to find out what happened to the scientist later the investigators find out a alien is using the machine to kill anyone who knew of his existence. the episode was classified as science fiction because it had all the three plus one elements of science fiction. some of the elements were the fantastic assumption which was the assumption that aliens exist in the universe, the intellectual excitement is the fact the we could one day make a machine that could tune in to your brain frequency. the high adventure is present when the investigators find out who the killer is and that they are not human and finally the ambiguous ending happens when the alien confessed to killing of the scientist and then disappears into thin air. I thought the most intresting part of the episode was the idea of the O.B.I.T machine because in the real world we have tracking devices, drones and cameras that can tell like the O.B.I.T machine where you are and what you are doing almost everywhere in the world.
